14th Century Oak Coffer Front

A riven oak clamp fronted Gothic coffer front. The two end clamps are carved with two segmented roundels and one square one. The whole front is surrounded by a star carved motif. The central motif represents two fleurs-de-lys with Gothic arches. This strap carving (which retained its original paint) imitates the earlier iron bound chests. The decoration is untouched and there are traces of the original red staining.The lock plate is probably later and has been moved.
