An Edwardian Freestanding Four Poster Bed
An Edwardian Freestanding Four Poster Bed
A huge Edwardian freestanding chinoiserie lacquered four poster bed, circa 1920. This freestanding bed could go in the centre of a room or against a wall, as it has identical decoration on both front and back of the headboard. This is very unusual and was probably commissioned for the centre of a room.
On the headboard the chinoiserie trellis work decoration is topped with a pagoda and turned finials. The four turned posts are fluted all around and are supported by square decorative posts, with porcelain castors. These posts support the cornice with hidden curtain rails and runners. This in turn supports the wood and canvas tester. On the outside of the tester there is a similar trellis work pattern and eight turned finials with imitation fluting. The inside of the tester is painted with a sky scape of clouds and pink and yellow trailing roses.
The whole bed is lacquered in an off-white and is decorated in various greens. The bed is bolted and screwed together and can be fully dismantled.
This four poster bed will support a king size, super king size or custom made base and mattress.
It has been restored to sound country house condition, minor restoration or conservation could be done if requested.
