Scandinavian Carved Beechwood Coffer

A 19th Century Scandinavian carved beechwood coffer. This simply made country rustic coffer is entirely held together by wooden dowls, as is the wooden hinged top. The top and front are carved with apotropaic symbols or witches marks to ward off evil and the devil. This particular symbol is called a hexafoil or daisy wheel, used from medieval times in churches and houses often near doors, windows and fire hearths.
